Read, Write, Love or Survival of the Literate

Let’s say you’re stranded on the proverbial dessert island. Which would you choose: Tiramisu, creme brulee, flan, strawberry/rhubarb pie a la commode, or a brownie, hot fudge sundae? If you say something totally healthy like fresh fruit with plain yogurt, I’ll know you’re lying.

But seriously, what if you were confined to any isolated place. I hesitate to say desert island because, obviously water would be your first choice, but after water and chocolate, would you choose a) a selection of books sufficient to occupy your mind for the duration of your isolation; b) writing materials, a Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language, and a thesaurus; or c) one person you love?

The merits of each could mean the difference between sanity and talking to a volley ball (aka the one you love), so choose carefully. And assume that the other essentials for life would be attainable by employing the skills learned from reading Robinson Caruso, The Swiss Family Robinson, and by having watched Castaway.

  1. These are some very difficult choices!! I mean the pure joy of strawberry-rhubarb pie (but I’ll skip the commode and just have it a la mode) compared to a really good brownie is a very difficult decision. Having reading material is always wonderful but selection b) provides 2 books I never tire of reading! And although I would love to have another person with me, I would be loath to doom any of the people I love to a life of isolation with only me as their companion (not that I would be bad company but I would harbor a great deal of guilt). So give me the writing materials, (which with the already provided water and chocolate) and some tasty pie and I’ll pray for a computer and internet connection (or rescue). Perhaps by the time I’m found and brought back to civilization I’ll have completed my novel and produced enough poetry to fill many volumes….

  2. On a desert island, Judy? I would need at least one cow to make a custard pie… and some vegetation …. for the cow. 🙂
    Distraction?
Draw the sky map on the sand (if there are no clouds in the sky)
A book to find the names of wild plants!

      1. Ah! with your answers above, Judith, I realize that I wouldn’t make a good castaway on a desert island.
Is not Robinson Crusoe who wants. Maybe you, with your campsites in dry and difficult regions! 🙂
